Dear Parents,
At Tabernacle, we feel strongly that the formation of a child’s spirituality is built in several ways. These include the relationship between religion in the home and times set aside for learning in the church body (Sunday School, mission classes, etc.) as well as through worship. As we examine the life of the church as a whole, it is imperative to see, as Karen Marie Yust suggests in her book, Real Kids, Real Faith, whether the congregation has welcomed children into the whole life of the church, specifically in worship.
Here, at Tabernacle, we have made a conscious effort to include young children in active ways in our worship. However, one may still witness the curiosity of a seven-year-old turn into the apathy of a ten-year-old over time when it comes to singing, prayer, and listening attentively to a sermon in worship.
Everyone Worship! has been designed to give both children and parents the tools they need:
? to be engaged in worship,
? to understand church “lingo,”
? to be exposed to the intentional rhythms that are part of worship at Tabernacle,
? to open wide the windows of conversation about baptism, communion, prayer and the church year, and
? to include the children who find their way into this faith community in one of the most important things we do here – the worship of God!
We will begin the six-week Everyone Worship! program on October 1st. The children will be dismissed from the sanctuary at the same time as the Worship Explorers. While the Worship Explorers go to the front of the sanctuary, the Everyone Worship children will go to the back of the sanctuary. This program will be led by Penny Jenkins, and may have a handful of “guest speakers” come in to talk about certain topics. Because this program has not been offered in the last few years, children in 3rd to 5th grades are invited to participate. Each week parents of participating children will receive information about the topic discussed that morning to assist with review and reinforcement during the week and in worship in the weeks ahead.

We thank God for the gift of Josh’s ministry at TCCC
Josh Small is a unique fit as a TCCC teacher—just ask the Yellow Room kids! Combine his love for children with his love for music and the arts, and you have a recipe for someone who lights up the day for the ones he interacts with every day. His musical gifts abound, playing the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and drums. You’ll hear him sing a lot, including in the annual TCCC Christmas Pageant. His music has taken him around the world. Josh has traveled to play all over the USA except Hawaii and Alaska. He toured in Europe, Australia, and Brazil, for example. And here at home he has used his musical skills to help with SPARC.
About 8 years ago Josh needed a change. He graduated from VCU with a degree in Philosophy and had been working various restaurant jobs. After returning from a 6-week band tour, Josh decided to make the call to TCCC as a couple of his friends who worked there had suggested. “There are not too many jobs like this one, where a person loves to come to work—especially in the morning when you have quieter time to talk with the kids. It’s an easy job. It’s a special honor to be with these kids….Their language acquisition is poetry. Like when one of my kids said ‘close the lights’ when telling me to cut the lights off in this room. Who says that? Only children! ….I used that phrase in a song.”
Josh has a special style in working with our children. He is straightforward. “They remember everything, and you forget everything. It gives me a good way to teach about making mistakes—it’s okay to make a mistake and own up to it….I use prompts and backward teaching to instill confidence. Who makes mistakes? We all do!”
Josh admits that it was really after he finished school that he started to love to read for pleasure, and now he is an avid reader.
What is his inspiration? “My mom and dad. Mom took care of children—she drove a school bus for years….My dad is just a big kid—he loves to play!” Josh says he takes after both of them. No doubt he sets a terrific example for the children he mentors. He is a true TCCC star teacher—thanks Josh for all that you do!
P.S. On Tuesday, July 11th, Josh’s mom had a very serious operation. We purposefully delayed the release of this article to give time for healing. We are pleased that his mother has continued to improve over the past six weeks. We continue to pray for Josh and his family.

We have officially begun our partnership with City Parking Inc. to convert the Meadow Street Parking lot into a public pay lot. Neighbors have been informed of the changes and signage will go up in the week ahead. The assets that are raised from this new initiative will support the mission of the church. Thanks for your patience as we work out the initial kinks.
Rest Assured. All members and guests of the church will have full access to free parking 24/7. All of the parking lots are fully reserved for guests and members on Sundays.
Next Steps. We need you take a free brief minutes in the week ahead and register your vehicles for the free permit. Click here to apply for the free one year permit.
What if….? What if you accidentally get a parking citation before you get a chance to register for the permit? No problem. Just notify the office and we’ll take care of it.
Where should I park during weekdays, nights, or Saturdays?
We are reserving the small parking lot in the alley, behind the church building, for visitors, volunteers, and members. This will make it easier to get into the building as you won’t have to walk across meadow! Of course, you can also park in the Meadow Street Parking/Public lot as members and guests of the church get free parking 24/7. Just be sure to register for the 12 month permit.

Celebrating the completion of our sound system upgrade
We are beyond grateful to the generous donors that made it possible purchase our new sound system! The upgrades have been completed. These upgrades include a new digital mixer, new speakers for the main floor and balcony, new choir monitors for even controlled coverage in the choir loft, and new microphone for the special music, and stage podium. Additionally, new audio and video cabling was installed for future video feeds from the stage, choir loft, and sound both.
Improvements include remote sound control with mobile devices, simplified digital audio recording for the podcast by removing the requirement for secondary sound mixer and laptop, improved sound under the balcony, and ample future expansion for inputs and output of the system. Volunteers have given over 150 combined hours to install the 3500 feet providing approximately $12,000 in installation savings.
We are currently building an audio/visual team to take turns running the soundboard and podcast/Livestream camera. Please let us know if you’d like to receive training and join the rotation.
