A Community of Listeners and Speakers

I do love being surrounded by wise and thoughtful—as in always thinking people.  This past Sunday as we thought about worship as defined by the theologian Soren Kierkegaard where he states that worship is a drama with the people as actors, the pastor as a prompter and God as the audience I was reminded by several of you about what a limiting view of worship this is.  While it is much superior to the idea that we come to worship to be entertained by the people leading worship as an audience in a public performance it can at some point place the people participating in worship into performers seeking to please God with their performance of worship. This is perhaps an equally unsatisfactory view of worship.

I was reminded by one of you of another definition of the word “audience”:  a formal hearing or interview with someone of authority and another:  an opportunity of being heard and yet another:  the act or state of hearing.  These definitions can expand our view of worship into an opportunity to come into the presence of God in order to be heard and to hear. Essentially making both God and the participants in worship “audience” in one or the other of the definitions.  What is removed is the unspoken word that often is thought of in partnership with “audience” and that is “entertainment.”  We are not in worship to entertain God, or ourselves but are in worship to hear and also to be heard.  The elements of worship are there to prompt the speaking and hearing on both sides.  Come this week to worship prepared to participate in an audience with God as a community of listeners and speakers.  This is only the beginning of this discussion—please keep talking and thinking!

Safety Protocol Team Update

Re-Entry Phase One

Dear Church Family,

We are thrilled that COVID numbers continue to improve! The light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer and closer, but we are not there quite yet. We are, however, ready to move forward, especially in light of the new recommendations that have come from the CDC.

At the same time, we acknowledge that we are all in different places when it comes to feeling safe in the midst of a pandemic. Things are heading in the right direction…..but we feel that it is prudent to continue reopening the church in a phased approach.

The next phase in our reopening protocol will begin THIS SUNDAY, June 27! So you know what to expect, here is what has changed:

  • Every major door of the church will be open and available for you to enter. Sign-ins will still be required and each major entrance will have a sign in sheet.
  • Starting this Sunday you will no longer be required to wear masks when you are seated in your pod if you are fully vaccinated. We will continue to have social distancing, but people in the same pod may sit together without masks on. If you are moving around the building or singing (except for choir leaders) please do still wear masks. Children have not been able to get the vaccine and we want to make young families feel comfortable in our space.
  • We can begin to share meals and drink coffee together again! We do ask that in this phase you stay socially distanced when you are eating together.

Grace and Peace!

Re-Entry Phases

We are thrilled that COVID numbers continue to improve! The light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer and closer, but we are not there quite yet. We are, however, ready to move forward, especially in light of the new recommendations that have come from the CDC.

At the same time, we acknowledge that we are all in different places when it comes to feeling safe in the midst of a pandemic. We are excited that in May, we were able to successfully reopen Sunday Morning worship and this past Sunday we opened our doors to small groups that wanted to meet back in the building. Things are heading in the right direction…..but we feel that it is prudent to continue reopening the church in a phased approach.

Phase One

Begins no earlier than June 20th. This phase will start when the state positivity rate is under 3.0 for two weeks.

In this phase we will no longer:

  • Have to enter through specific doors. All major doors to the church will be open. Sign-ins will still be required, but the doors will no longer be manned by a protocol team member.
  • Wear masks when we are seated in our pods. We will continue to have social distancing, but people in the same pod may sit together without masks on. If you are moving around the building or singing (except for choir leaders) please do still wear masks. Children have not been able to get the vaccine and we want to make young families feel comfortable in our space.
  • Restrict eating together indoors as long as you are socially distanced from one another.

Phase 2

This phase will start when the state positivity rate is under 2.0 for two weeks.
In this phase we will no longer:

  • Require social distancing. We will keep a section in the balcony open for the most vulnerable among us so that they do have a safe space.
  • Wear masks in small groups IF the group comes to a consensus that all are comfortable doing so.
  • Require social distancing in small groups or Sunday School classes that meet within the doors of the church.
  • Require social distancing when eating together.

Phase 3

This phase will start when the state positivity rate is under 1.5 for two weeks.
In this phase, we will go back to pre pandemic church and will no longer require masks or social distancing. This day is coming!

Sabbath | June 13, 2021

We set aside the Sabbath day for the purpose of holy rest, sacred connection, and life-giving worship. Read more about our approach to Sabbath.

We encourage you to set time aside for three unique movements: PRELUDE, communal WORSHIP, and CIRCLES. All of these are times of holy rest and worship.

Make sure to join us after worship for a going away picnic for our beloved Pastor Meg Lacy Vega and her husband JJ.

PRELUDE

Begin your day with a quiet, reflective time with God at the place and time of your choosing. This material is intended for personal meditation.  You may want to be in a quiet place and light your own personal candle, but you may also just be sitting in your car waiting for an appointment. Where you are is not the point. The point is that you are taking the time to be quiet and listen so that you may walk through your day in communion with God.

Reflective Readings

Video Contemplation

We will meet at 11am (Eastern). This is our time to come together as a congregation and worship as one, whether in-person or online. Today’s scripture is James 2:1-13. If you’d like to return in-person, please see our What to Expect page for information on entrance and safety.

CIRCLES

June 6 Ballot Items

ITEM #1:  A SAFER/MORE HOSPITABLE SPACE

The Building and Grounds Committee, Finance Team, and Administrative Board jointly recommend the expenditure of up to $5,000 on making the 3rd floor of our education building safer and more hospitable. Upon approval, the funds would be taken from the Church’s “Forward Fund”*

Rewatch the town hall from May 30 in which this issue was discussed.

please note: we received word, just before the release of this ballot, that a potential anonymous contribution may cover the expense of this project.  We’re still seeking clarification from the donor.  If we receive the anonymous gift, no church funds would be spent for this project without permission of the Administrive Board and/or congregation-at-large.

ITEM #2:  DECLARATION OF INTENT WITH EXCELL

Over the course of these last several months, the Facilities Use Committee, Building and Grounds Committee, and our Pastor have been in active conversation with leaders in the ExCell Program in pursuit of an informal partnership, first through use of the church building and secondly through relationship building. Historically, the congregation has entrusted the Facilities Use Committee, in conjunction with Building and Grounds and the Administrative Board, to work through contractual agreements with community programs requesting the use of physical space.

Our church leaders and the ExCell Program Staff have done a stellar job in working through the details of this recommendation.  On a practical level, Church Leadership is asking for the congregation’s approval in bringing the ExCell Program offices into the church building.  In turn, ExCell would make a minimum contribution of $500 per month. Whereas, neither organization can commit to a specific length of time, we are both expressing our desire to experiment with an informal partnership over the course of a minimum of three years.

What makes this particular invitation unique is the intent that comes with the invitation. Upon approval from the congregation, both entities would commit themselves to the investment of time and energy in relationship building, with one another and also serving together in our community.  Whereas, none of this would be formal in nature, it declares that we both have a desire for mutual thriving of our organizations and, more importantly, in the thriving of children, families, and educators in our community.  Voting to approve this ballot item, is an expression of support for deliberate relationship building and continued deliberate use of our physical building in service in our neighborhood.

Rewatch the town hall from May 30 in which this issue was discussed.

Get more information on the partnership with ExCELL.

ITEM #3: SUMMER YOUTH COORDINATOR

With Meg’s departure on June 13, the TBC Youth are an immediate need for planning their summer curriculum.

Coordinator Tasks:

  • Send out Youth Tab Weekly email
  • Preparation & Execution of Youth Circle
  • Checking in with students on an as-needed basis, particularly around issues raised as prayer concerns, etc.
  • Weekly “Tab Tuesday” events (held on Tuesdays in 2020, but day may be adjusted to best fit schedule of youth and team members)
  • Work with the youth to plan one social event each month

The Personnel Committee is recommending Bonnie Dance to serve as the Summer Youth Coordinator.  Bonnie has formed trusted relationships with our youth over the last several years, and also brings her experience as an educator.  Bonnie has her Masters in Teaching, and is currently a STEAM Innovation teacher at Ettrick Elementary School in Chesterfield County.

Allocation & Cost:

  • Position Length: June 16 – August 16
  • 10 Hours per week
  • $25/hour ($3K for the Summer)

ITEM #4:  HIRING A PART-TIME/TEMP MEDIA DIRECTOR

The Media Director acts as the liaison between staff and media volunteers to create engaging online media and incorporate it into worship and online spaces. The role this person plays is vital if we hope to serve an online community without burdening our pastoral staff. The Media Director works closely with the worship leader in implementing visual goals for worship, both live and online. They will also be responsible for running the Livestream, and coordinating A/V Volunteers on Sundays.

The Personnel Committee recommends the church explore and hire for the Temporary Director position with the hope it can be filled prior to Spencer’s departure.

Allocation & Cost:

  • 15-20 Hours per week
  • If individual requires training: $12-15/hour (likely requiring the full 20 hours/week); if already skilled: $20-25/hour (likely at the lesser 15 hours/week)

ITEM #5: STAFF SUPPORT AND DEVELOPMENT

The Personnel Committee believes strongly that it is the desire and responsibility of the church to promote positive relationships, and a healthy work environment for all staff of Tabernacle Baptist Church.  Overwork and staff burnout are commonplace issues in churches all around us, particularly following the past year of pandemic isolation and racial discord at the forefront, and Tabernacle is just as susceptible as any other church.

The Committee recommends enlisting the help of the Center for Congregational Health to assist in furthering this goal for our existing staff, and to provide this environment to the staff we look to bring on in the future.  An allocation of $2000 will provide exit interviews for departing staff members, pastoral check-ins for the remaining staff, and the framework for additional possibilities, should the church and staff desire to move further.

New Life, New Beginnings: Part 2

This is part 2 of a series of messages from our pastor, Sterling Severns, leading us into a time of renewal and new life. In this video, we hear about the last season in the life of our church, and where the Spirit is leading us in the days ahead. Make sure you watch this to prepare for our business meeting on Sunday!

New Life, New Beginnings: Part 1

This series of messages was given by Pastor Sterling Severns in May of 2021 as the congregation emerged from a pandemic lockdown and began seeking God’s will for revival at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. Part 1 was delivered as a sermon to the congregation on May 9, 2021.
