To those who have disappointment, heart ache, and distance with your children–we sit with you
To those who lost their mothers this year–we grieve with you
To those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother–we acknowledge your experience
To those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood–we are better for having you in our midst
To those who have had abortions–we remember you on this day
To those who are single and long to be married and mothering your own children–we mourn that life has not turned out the way you longed for it to be
To those who stepparent–we walk with you on these complex paths
To those who envisioned lavishing love on grandchildren, yet that dream is not to be–we grieve with you
To those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year–we grieve and rejoice with you
To those who placed children up for adoption–we commend you for your selflessness and remember how you hold that child in your heart
And to those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising–we anticipate with you
This Mother’s Day, we walk with you. Mothering is not for the faint of heart and we have real warriors in our midst. We remember you.

On September 6, we will gather for a brief Communion service at 9:30AM before being sent out to worship with sister churches (mostly virtually) and participate in our Sunday School classes. Sabbath is the culmination of Creation. It is planted deep in our hearts. As we approach fall, we are moving into a new rhythm that we hope will remind us to celebrate our freedom in Christ and deliberately engage in relationship with God and with others. We invite you to pray and think about this structure before we begin on September 13.
Our Sabbath will take form in three parts. Prelude is an opportunity to prepare your heart for the day. This is something you can do creatively, and we will have some opportunities to do so alongside others. Communal Gathering will remain an integral part of our Sundays. We will continue to gather as a church family at 11AM to worship God in unison. Circles are deliberate engagement with the Word and intentional commitment. Our goal is for Tab Circles to help people find places of belonging, support, and spiritual community while we can’t all gather in the building together. Sign up for a Circle here by August 31!

One of the things we learned from our summer survey is that a lot of folks who are a part of a small group, Sunday School class, or some other community within TBC have continued to feel connected and engaged, while many who are not part of a group like that have felt more disconnected during the pandemic. Our goal is for Tab Circles to help people find places of belonging, support, and spiritual community while we can’t all gather in the building together.

We’ve been approached with an opportunity to partner with a local organization providing educational support to students in Richmond Public Schools. The timeline for our decision is short, and there are a number of variables to consider that could have a significant impact on the way we use our spaces and conduct ministry. We are asking our Tabernacle family to fast and pray as we discern God’s calling for our church’s response together. Important Discussion Meeting for Parents and Grandparents!
Plan to join the pastoral staff on Tuesday August 4 at 9:00 PM for a discussion concerning children’s educational needs for the coming months. The pastoral staff and the Children’s Team need your input concerning how the church can be helpful to your family in the near future. We know that life is challenging on so many fronts and are interested in helping to problem solve together. The Ad Hoc Constitution Revision Committee will be presenting the revised Constitution and Bylaws at the Quarterly Meeting on July 26th. This will just be an information sharing opportunity with a vote by ballot to accept the document being held two weeks later. They will also share a page of items that may require Constitution and Bylaws changes later and also topics discussed at the Town Hall meetings that did not involved changes in the document, but were important for follow up later.
We want to hear from you as we make plans for what church will look like in the coming months! If you call Tab home in any way, please take some time to complete our survey about your experience engaging with the church during the pandemic and how we can best support one another in our faith journeys moving forward. CALL TO WORSHIP: 1 Kings 19:1-14
19 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”
3 Elijah was afraid[a] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.
All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7 The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.
The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Hospitality, therefore, means primarily the creation of a free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them a space where change can take place.”

Our Community Ministry is actively serving neighbors on a weekly basis. We have consistently seen about 50 families each week, and sometimes up to 100! If you would like to support this key ministry to our neighbors, our current needs include:

Where is the servant church amidst the bluster and boast? Look to the tables: Look to the dining tables where stranger and misfit find both food and welcome. Look to the altar tables where humility and justice roll down. Look to the bread: Broken shared at the altar broken shared in the home broken shared in the lunch break broken shared in the open heart.
Look to the eyes: eyes that rejoice eyes that weep eyes that celebrate eyes that see the Christ clothed in humanity Where is the servant church? Look to the eyes that see, across the table, through broken bread, the eyes of Christ in each returning gaze.
